Directions: The CNM 180 Final Project is essentially a culmination of all that you have learned this semester. The website for your final project is the one that you chose for task 6 and is, essentially, task 6. Your site should be a reflection of good design practices, decent content, clean code, and everything should work properly, especially links. Your completed task 6 needs to be placed into the “task-6” folder and needs to be uploaded to the www.mckenziecreations.com server, which was discussed at the beginning of the semester. Your final Web site should contain the minimum requirements from the following list. Your project will be evaluated on a scale of 0 to 10. Each item has a scale listed after it which translates into 0, 5, 6, 7, 8 and 10, 5 being an F or 50%, 10 being 100%. The theory here is that if you only got 5s on all the questions you would get a 50 which is failing, if you scored all 10s then you would get 100% for the test, all 7s would be a 70, etc. There are 10 categories worth 10 points each with a few extra credit items here and there. Each item has 5 sub-items that need to be completed, if you get all 5 you automatically get full credit or 10, you can see this in the table below for each category. If you didn’t do a particular topic such as an animation then you cannot give yourself any points for that section!
Keep in mind that you have done a lot of these categories already; the rest will be done in class over the next few weeks. The most important thing you need to remember is to make sure that all of your links work, if I can’t get to a page or if I don’t see an image then you won’t get credit. (Total Possible Score: 110), you must submit this document with your name to get credit, if I don’t see one of these when I am grading the final then you will get a zero. Please include your final score.
Your final web site must include the following to qualify for this evaluation:
I. A folder structure that is laid out the way it should have been in task 1 (11 possible points): 1. “cnms165” folder (site set-up in DW needs to point inside this folder) (1 point)
2. “your_last_name” folder (this folder, contains your tasks, lesson and final folders, this is your root folder) (1 point) 3. “PSD” folder DO NOT UPLOAD! (containing all Photoshop work, including the layered Photoshop file for this assignment, this folder should be above your "root" (folder with your last name) folder but inside your cnms165 folder) (1 point) 4. “images” folder (images displayed on web pages only) (1 point) “data” folder (extra credit worth 1 point, contains non-Web site info if there is any) (1 point EC) “task6” folder (1 point) “css” (must contain ONLY .css or .js-external javascript files) (1 point) 5. index.html (mandatory home page file MUST be index.htm, index.html or index.shtml) (2 point) about.htm(l) or comparable (1 point) portfolio.htm(l) or comparable (your button link could bring up a pop-up gallery) (1 point) contact.htm(l) (mandatory, must contain a working contact form—see # IX) (1 point)
II. The head section of your pages need to include the following items (13 possible points): 1. Appropriate titles for all pages (2 points) 2. Meta tag information that reflects your own personal site, be sure to alter any meta tags you have copied so that they are relevant. (5 points) 3. A link to an external stylesheet which should be located in the styles or CSS folder, if your pages include any style information apart from your linked CSS document you cannot give yourself these points. (4 points)
EC: you have included any styles that affect the look of the browser window such as styles for scrollbars (2 points)
III. The body tag and main content of your pages need to include the following items, this should be done with CSS. (16 possible points): 1. Needs to include margin designations which should all read zero for interface-based websites (1 point) 2. OnLoad event for pre-loading over state of rollover images must be included (this is automatically included by DW when you insert rollover images onto your page, provided that you keep that option checked) 3. Appropriate text-based content for your web site that is relevant to your web site theme, not just any old content will due here, you must have text-based content on at least your “home (index.htm)” and “about us” pages. (10 points). 4. Text-based links on the bottom of all your pages as discussed in class as well as a copyright statement. (4 points, must include both copyright and links)
IV. Examples of both image types (GIF & JPEG) need to be included and will be evaluated upon the following criteria (10 possible points): 1. Quality of gif and jpg images: as few artifacts or pixilation as possible, no matte issues for gifs (3 points) 2. Size of images relative to the scope of the web site (not too small or too large in dimensions and file size), this one gauges your design intentions. (3 points) 3. Appropriate use of gifs vs. jpgs using the rules outlined in class for these image types (i.e. text-based—gif, photo-based—jpg), this one gauges your understanding of image formats. (4 points)
V. A web interface that meets the following criteria (Both PhotoShop documents & Web Integration will be graded so make sure you have both in your folders) (10 possible points): 1. Buttons that have an off (up) state and on (over) state(you may use CSS-based links but they must look different on rollover and they cannot have an underline) (2 points). 2. A designated text/content area apart from a menu area (2 points) 3. Web site title header area (text-based or image-based logo for example) (2 points) 4. Seamless tiled background used in either a cell, table, layer, div or the page itself (2 points) 5. Site optimized for at least the 1024 x 768 monitor resolution size (PSD interface should reflect this) (2 points)
VI. EXTRA CREDIT SEC. An example of an appropriate animation that you created (I must be able to find the original PhotoShop document in your PSD folder so be sure to keep the original un-flattened file, if you are doing a JavaScript or DHTML animation then this rule wouldn’t apply). What I mean by appropriate is that it must be something that goes with your site’s theme. Your animation will be based upon the following criteria (10 possible points): 1. Functionality (2 points ec) 2. Quality (2 points ec) 3. File Size and file optimization (2 points ec) 4. Appropriateness of the animation to your site (1 points ec)
VII. CSS implementation (12 possible points): 1. CSS class applied to paragraph tags that effect your font site-wide OR a font style applied to <body> itself (2 points). 2. Vary your text size by using header tags that have been affected by styles (at least 1 header definition) (2 points). 3. Styles should be applied by using an external style sheet and not page or localized styles* (2 points). *There are a few situations that it is ok to use page-based or localized styles but for the most part it isn’t a good idea. 4. Hyperlinks should be affected by styles so that they stand out (2 points) either at the bottoms of your pages, menus or in-line links. 5. Use a Layer, Div or Span somewhere on your site (2 points). Extra Credit. Use a special CSS effect from a website such as www.dynamicdrive.com (2 extra points).
VIII. JavaScript use (20 possible points): 1. Rollover buttons, graded on use, quality and functionality (5 points) 2. The use of a pop-up window or some other appropriate behavior function generated in DreamWeaver somewhere on your site (the portfolio or gallery would be a good place) (5 points).. Extra Credit. Give yourself two extra points for each additional use of JavaScript you have implemented, check out www.dynamicdrive.com for examples of some great JavaScript and CSS effects you can implement (max of 10 extra points).
IX. Form functionality (12 possible points): 1. Text field for name (can include fields for address and phone) (1 points). 2. E-mail field (1 points). 3. Comments field w/virtual wrap on, can include a “how did you hear about us” drop-down field instead or in addition (1 points). 4. Reset and Submit buttons (1 points). 5. CGI statement in the form tag and appropriate hidden tags, at least redirect and recipient tags, redirect must go to a “Thank you” page using an absolute URL on your own website (6 points). Extra Credit. Form validation JavaScript w/appropriate settings—you must include asterisks w/required statement on the form to get credit (2 points).
X. Publishing your site (10 possible points): 1. Make sure site set-up in DW is pointing to the right folder w/the appropriate FTP, user name and PW info. 2. Make sure all links work (CSS, hyperlinks, image links and other files) and there are no spaces in file names. 3. Upload site and all components related to the site, DO NOT UPLOAD .PSD FILES, use the “upload included files” option initially when uploading your pages, you can save time by not using this feature every time you upload a page. 4. Make sure your folder structure has been maintained and reflects the proper structure as outlined in #I. 5. Test site for accuracy, spelling, grammar, punctuation, links, etc. then once uploaded confirm by checking the link to your site at www.smccme.net.
Please Note: Be very careful in section X, publishing the site a certain way is so important that I will take additional points off if inappropriate files are uploaded, links don’t work, images are missing, spelling and grammar are glaringly bad, the structure is not correct, etc. If I can’t get to your site at all you will receive a zero on your final which will seriously impact your final grade.
